Laurissilva is included in the Madeira Natural Park area. Council of Europe Biogenetic Reserve, UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and part of the Natura 2000 Network.

The Laurissilva Forest is the name by which the indigenous forest of Madeira is known, consisting predominantly of trees and shrubs with persistent foliage, with flat, dark green leaves. It occupies an area of around 15,000 hectares and is essentially located on the North and South coasts.

Of enormous richness, importance and specificity, this forest contains unique plant and animal species on a planetary scale and natural habitats that are representative and important for the conservation of biological diversity.
